We’re All Athletes Here

Many young athletes imagine themselves on the world’s largest stages—the Olympic podium, Madison Square Garden, or even center court at Wimbledon. For most, a professional playing career is not a long-term outcome. As careers evolve and priorities shift, the love of sport remains, even as the way we engage with it changes.

The good news is that sport extends far beyond competition. The lessons developed through athletic participation—discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience—endure well beyond the game itself and can shape a lifetime of personal and professional growth.

The global sports industry offers a wide range of career pathways, including coaching, performance, training, sports medicine, business operations, and athlete support services. Together, these toles power a multi-billion-dollar industry. While opportunities exist, entry into the field is highly competitive. Success requires more than passions; it demands specialized knowledge, hands-on experience, and strong professional networks.

At USSU, students are given a clear and structured pathway into the sports industry. Our curriculum emphasizes evidence-based approaches to coaching, management, training, treatment, and athlete development, preparing graduate to make meaning contributions across local, national, and international contexts. Students also benefit from close collaboration with experienced faculty and access to a powerful alumni network that supports professional growth and career development.

Community and collaboration are central to the USSU experience. Success here is not defined solely by outcomes, but by sustained growth, ethical practice, and shared purpose. Students learn in an environment that values academic rigor, experiential learning, and networking—grounded in a deep institutional understanding of sport and the people who dedicate their lives to it.

We understand this path because we’ve lived it. That perspective, and that support, set USSU apart.

Our Core Values

Our History

Founded in 1972 by Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich in response to the United States’ performance at the Munich Olympics, the United States Sports University (originally the United States Sports Academy) was created to professionalize sports education. Dr. Rosandich envisioned a “university without walls,” committed to combining academic rigor with practical training in coaching, sports management, and sports science.

After establishing early roots in Milwaukee and then at the University of South Alabama, the University found its permanent home in Daphne, Alabama, in 1983. That same year, it earned its initial accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), cementing its status as a recognized institution of higher learning.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, USSU expanded its global reach through partnerships with Olympic committees and national sports organizations, delivering coaching and sports leadership programs across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In 1984, the institution launched the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA), blending sports with cultural expression and preserving the legacy of athletic achievement through art.

In 2001, the University pioneered online sports education, expanding access to its programs globally. Following the retirement of Dr. Rosandich in 2015 and his passing in 2020, his son Dr. T.J. Rosandich continued the mission before passing the torch to current president Dr. Steve Condon in 2023.

Recent years have brought major milestones: the addition of undergraduate programs, the launch of intercollegiate athletics in 2024, and the official transition from USSA to the United States Sports University (USSU) in 2025. These changes reflect USSU’s continued growth as a comprehensive, forward-thinking institution dedicated to developing the next generation of sports leaders.

STRATEGIC PLAN
Thriving In a Changing Landscape

The United States Sports University (USSU) recognizes the dynamic environment of higher education. While universities nationwide face challenges like shifting demographics, declining enrollment, evolving student needs, and technological advancements, niche institutions like USSU require a particularly strategic approach.

Embracing The Future

We designed our Strategic Plan to enable USSU to not only survive but thrive in such a competitive and amorphic enrollment environment by positioning the university for leadership in key areas. The plan is built upon one strategic goal: to be acknowledged as the top tier in sports education.

This goal is supported by five objectives leading to the attainment of the goal: Lead, Value, Build, Impact, and Educate. Each objective is supported by a series of strategies to help the institution achieve this ultimate goal. Finally, specific targets and milestones measure USSA’s performance on each objective. This measurement system is in place for the duration of the plan and drives the outcomes assessment program implemented by the university.
